Unbelievable Hibiscus is now spreading it's internet roots and digging deep. We are on the path to creating a website, we are just working on the layout and other issues. If anyone has any advise or would like to lend a hand we would be glad to see what you can do to get this eye-candy onto the web. Hibiscus have been a passion of ours for many years and all we want is for the world to fall in love just like we did.

When we started we couldn't have dreamed we would be hybridizing our own and having to find a name for new hibiscus that we were the first people on the planet to see. The time we have spent with these amazing plants has changed our lives by giving us an outlet for our energy and it has allowed us the opportunity to meet some funny and some very funny people who are glad to brainstorm with you over our shared labor of love.

So get yourself a few hibiscus and make some new friends who will help you to create your own special bloom and we hope to see it at a show soon.

Growing new hibiscus by grafting is easier than people think, says Don Mixon, president of the Sunset Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society.

"Everybody thinks the graft has to be so precise, then they take it home and they don't do anything and it dies," he says.

What's important is what happens after the grafting.

"It's like having a baby and coming home and putting it in the baby's room and then closing the door. A week later you look in on the baby and you say, 'Oh, my, what happened to the baby?'"

He offers these pointers:

Propagating By Root
•Cut a limb from a bush, and cut off the top couple of branches to where the limb is solid.

•Cut the leaves on the remaining branches so that just a small portion near the base of the leaf remains.

•Put the cutting in a container, and cover with a damp cloth. Leave overnight.

•Plant the cutting where it will stay moist.

•For best results, start with a very small pot and move the plant into bigger pots as appropriate. If you put a small plant in a large pot, the plant won't thrive. The pot will be too wet or too dry for a small plant.

Propagating By Grafting
•Taking a root stock that has already rooted (which you can buy at a nursery), make a cut starting near the top and slicing down 2 to 3 inches to form a pocket.

•Get a small limb from a bush to graft onto the root stock. Cut the bottom of the limb into a V shape that will insert into the root stock "pocket." Insert the graft.

•Match the cambium layers - the green layer closest to the bark - to ensure the green of the graft is lined up with that of the root stock.

•Wrap about four times with surveyor's tape (available at home improvement stores).

•Seal with Scotch tape.

•Plant it in a small pot and place in a shady spot. Keep it moist. After a couple of weeks, start allowing partial shade and partial sun.

Before I got involved in hibiscus with my family I would have never thought that there could be so many different colors & sizes available. From four inches to a foot, Big and small we have them all!
